The "San Francisco Olympic Club" was founded in 1860, as an athletics and private social club. Early members included Mark Twain and William Randolph Hearst. The club moved into its current Post Street clubhouse (next door to the Bohemian Club) in 1912.

In 1918 the club took over the nearby Lakeside Golf Club, and in the 1920s built a second clubhouse and developed two additional 18-hole golf courses on adjacent land.
