Originally called the "Ponderosa" and owned by L. G. "Doc" Sweaney. The bar was bought by Dan Smethers in 1968, who advertised a card room club inside "The Ponderosa".

The C. W. Rice Co. shipped the "DOC'S" HHL-mold chips to L. G. Sweaney in Santa Rosa in 1967. The attribution of the DiSq-mold and L-mold hot stamp chips is traced to Eastman's Illustrated Guide to California Card Room Gaming Chips & Checks (1998).
