In the nineteenth century it was installed in the city a large community of Europeans. For recreation and distraction of these foreigners, there were founded English style clubs, with very limited access-.They possessed the usual facilities of this kind of clubs: chat rooms, reading rooms,billard, restaurant, gambling rooms, etc. The Cercle Mohamed Ali was founded in the end of late 19th century and was established on the Rue Rosette. “The name of the cercle cames in honour of the founder of the dinasty that ruled the country since 1805.Most of the founding board were members of the khedivial family.Some wealthy foreigners were also members of the board.In 1908 the Cercle order the construction of a french style building for its headquarters on the Rue Sherif Pasha. The requirement for be membership was to be a prince, a pasha, rich or reasonably famous.The Mohamed Ali was the most sought social club in Cairo. Had a billard room, gambling room, a smoking room, a guilded banquet hall, a great library and a very well stocked wine cellar. Its restaurant had a very fine cuisine supervised by Italian or French Chefs.In 1952 the assets of Mohammed Ali dinasty in the cercle were confiscated by the State. The cercle survived a few more years under the orientation of the other shareholders. In 1963 the Cercle was seized by the State only to reopen as the Tahir (Diplomatic) Club. “( based on the article The Mohamed Club, by Samir Raafat for Community Times, March 1998)
