During the period of 1st World War , Lisbon became a city of fun and unruled pleasure. Some magnificent and luxurious casinos were opened. Several clubs were established down town of the capital, some of which in luxurious palaces. This illicit activity was only possible with the connivance of the police department, which closed its eyes in Exchange of some special favours . This was only achieved in late 1927, with gambling regulations , defining specific gambling areas -thermal and beach zones and no longer in the cities. This gambling club was opened in Palacio Foz at 43, Praça dos Restauradores, with ann opening prior to 1913 and a closure after 1930.According to opinions of that time “ from all clubs existing in Lisbon, Maxim´s is no doubt the one arousing more enthousiasm, ..its rooms and and halls absolutly amazing..everything in the club is beautiful, outstanding,magnificent…in its variety program there is always variety perfomances, singers and dancer dancers preceeding great names of show business
