Pfaender (2004) reports that Jim Ross, locally known as Diamond Jim or Zircon Jim, originally bought the chips. Also reported to have been used as tournament chips at "Five Brothers Bar & Cardroom", until it burned down in 1987.

The attribution of the L-mold "<> JIM" hot stamp chips to "Five Brothers" is traced to Eastman's Illustrated Guide to California Card Room Gaming Chips & Checks (1998).
