Póvoa de Varzim is a renowned and very popular beach in northern Portugal. In the nineteenth century possessed more than a dozen casinos, the most famous being the Café Chinês. Two years after Café Chinês, Café Universal , owned by Francisco DINIZ da Silva VIANNA, opened in 1888, as a neighbor-in-hand to Chinês, luxurious and very distinctive ,with selected frequency. With private orchestra and excellent artists to act during the summer months, the Café was filled every night. Have not glow without the luxury of yesteryear, the Universal was languishing and eventually close its doors in 1975. Other gambling rooms were Café Suisso, Café David, Café Luso-Brazileiro, Café Allegria, Café Aliança, Café Nogueira and Café da Praia. The most important were undoubtedly the Café Chinês and the Café Universal.The gambling worked in those Cafés until the rules of the gambling in 1927, when the exclusive gambling in Póvoa de Varzim was delivered to Casino da Póvoa. |
