The Cercle is the place of appointment of the aristocracy and high finance members.To be admitted the candidate had to be proposed by a member and balloted for- almost the cercles were very restrictive to new members. The Cercles were conducted on similar principles to the clubs in London.The members subscribing supported usualy a magnificent apartment in which the members join for the purpose of conversation, reading papers, diner and playing cards and billiard. In some of them the gambling reaches high matches.Some cercles organized theatrical representations, musical evenings, art exhibitions and great dinners, and had accommodation for members.The Cercle des Chemins de Fer was founded in 1854 by directors of various companies of railways.The first installation was located on the site occupied by the administration of the Grand-Central, 16 place Vendome. On January 1, 1855 settled in the corner of Rue Michodiere Street with Boulveard des Italiens. These facilities were quite comfortable with game rooms, dining rooms and several lounges decorated in a style Louis XV. It Possessed a fantastic library of books on the railway theme.Whist and piquet were the preferable games and the strongest bids never exceed five francs by jeton (Charles Yriarte, Les Cercles de Paris, 1864). In 1895 became the Cercle du Chateau d'Eau, which in the years 1910/20 ´s became the Cercle Haussmann, all located in the same Rue de la Michodiere.
