Port Bou, Spain
Type: Land Based
Status: Closed
Open: 1931

Port Bou is a town in Catalonia situated very close to the French border. In the second half of the 19th century, before the construction of the railroad, a very small fishing village had been established, and also a small Detachment of border guards (1860) to monitor the passage of wholesale smuggling. The little smuggle was quite tolerated and even the carabineros participated. Soon afterwards the great expansion would take place, as a result of the construction of the railroad. When the roads, the station and the different railway and customs services were located, a large artificial esplanade was built. Between this embankment and the sea an important population grew, formed especially by the workers of the railroad and the customs. On October 28, 1877 the railway line Girona-Figueres was inaugurated, and on January 20, 1878 the train arrived at Portbou. Soon the population grew and all kinds of commerce related to the transit of passengers and goods proliferated (hotels, cafes, restaurants, hostels). On 1931 opened Casino EspaƱa and the Grand Casino Congesta. With the proximity of France, many Frenchmen and even elements of the German garrisons settled there during the war went to the casinos of Por Bou to attend the spectacles and to gamble.
