The Club was founded by a group of Asturian on October 2, 1881, under the name Centro de Asturianos. The outstanding personality of the founders led the Center to a great social and cultural splendor, with recreational activities, charities, etc. Throughout its long existence it has crossed high and low moments. Initially located in the Palacio de Estrarena, demolished in 1912 to expand the Gran Via, it went to San Jeronimo Street 28 until 1916 when it moved to Calle de Alcalá 1 in the center of Madrid. In 1917 he obtained a gambling license, whose revenue allowed him to bear the burden with his new headquarters. After having moved again from its headquarters in the 70's, it has once again moved definitively to the Asturias building that it acquired, continuing its recreational, cultural, sporting, theatrical, folkloric, etc. Today it is the oldest Spanish Regional House in the world (from website of the Center). The gambling ended in 1923, according to the excerpt from the newspaper La Libertad of January 11, 1923 "The gambling ended in Madrid - On orders from the Minister of Governance, the Civil Governor determined yesterday the closing of the gambling ..The Minister of Government told reporters yesterday that what happened the previous night in CENTRO ASTURIANO, was predicted ... added that the Circulo Literário, Andaluz, Mageritano, Asturiano, Manchego and Circulo de Autores were closed and that soon the gambling would be suspended in all them..” |
