Circulo Mercantil or Circulo of la Union Mercantil was a recreational society founded in the late nineteenth century. Also known as Casino Mercantil.Circulo Mercantil was founded in Malaga on October 26, 1862. As detailed in its first statutes, its creation obeyed the desire of a group of people to "establish an eminently recreational association" and "to provide its members with the joys of good society , the reading of newspapers and the recreation of all lawful gambling, with absolute prohibition of those of chance”. The Círculo Mercantil was in its beginnings a closed association, since there were imposed exclusive conditions to be able to integrate in her. At the same time, aspirants to join the entity were committed to comply with a number of standards. Its founders and first partners belonged to a middle and upper social class, and their work activity was related to commerce, agriculture or industry. Those who did not participate in some of these activities were not admitted. However, over the years, officials, liberal professionals and, in general, people whose work was engaged in other branches of industry were brought in.
The first official headquarters of the Ciorculo Mercantil de Malaga was established in calle Carnecerías . In 1869 he moved to the building located at number 2 of A calle Atarazanas . The new space stood out by its breadth. It was located in one of the most important areas of the city, right in the historical center. It was closed in 1980.
