| The palace was built by Khedive Ismail to host Empress Eugenie during the September 1869 celebrations marking the opening of the Suez Canal.The palace was in one vast block, with several distinct buildings- one for Khedive himself, one for his harem, and one for visitors.There was a beautiful kiosk where the Princess of Wales stayed when in Egypt.The gardens was very extensive with all kind of rare plants and trees, animals- lions, tigers, giraffes, etc,fountains, lakes, etc.
It was sold to Paul Draneht Pasha and Commander Oblieght in 1889, and by 1893 was the elegant Gezirah Palace Hotel.From the Graphic 1893:” the beautiful building was trabsformed into the most comfortable and luxurious hotel in the world .”.
The ancient Kiosk, on the borders of the lake, which is in the gardens of the Palace, has been transformed into a splendid casino, containing magnificent ball and reception rooms, and being patronised by the elite of Cairo Society. There was gambling such as petits chevaux and baccarat.
During World War One the Palace it was put into service as military hospital, starting its slow death, being put in sale in 1919.The Gezirah Palace is currently the central part of the Cairo Marriott Hotel complex.
