Anthony Cornero operated three gambling ships, the S.S. Tango, S.S. Rex, and S.S. Lux, off the coast of California between 1934 and 1946. The most luxurious was the Rex, which had a capacity for 2,000 passengers and a crew of 325, including chefs, a full orchestra, broadcasters manning a commercial radio station, and, of course, working girls.

The casino offered craps, roulette, blackjack, chuck-a-luck, poker, faro, 150 slot machines, and a 400-seat bingo parlor. The horse book received its results via short-wave radio. The games were reportedly honest, and Cornero posted a $100,000 reward for anyone who could prove that they weren't. The Rex was so successful that Cornero and his partners netted upwards of $300,000 a month.

The B. C. Wills Co. ordered at least 4,200 of the Crest & Seal chips in three denominations from the USPC Co. (Cinncinatti, OH) for Cornero on 4/1/1938. No order card for the large crown chip in the preserved T. R. King records.

About Illegal Casinos - by their nature, information about illegal, or unlicensed, casinos is hard to find and difficult to verify. Information presented on the ChipGuide about these casinos is provided as the result of our best efforts but may not be 100% accurate. Even if the information is accurate, gamblers move around and may take their equipment with them; items used in one casino may have also been used in others. Please send verified information about illegal casinos to the ChipGuide so that we may improve our accuracy.

Back side is blank. Token size is 22mm. "Anillo Restrike", While doing research on another token, I stumbled across a token website by Ken Barr, www.kenbarr.com. He has an article discussing fantasy tokens. In the article he talks about Anillo Restrikes. I copied and pasted the paragraph about Anillo below the auction ad. While it is probably correct as to design, it is not correct as to color and material. Also, it is not now known what was on the other side of the actual token. If you Google "Anillo Restrikes", you’ll find lots of info on these restrikes that are out there. K. ANILLO RESTRIKES These are uniface aluminum restrikes of tokens and medals, made by Anillo Industries of Orange, Calif. in 1968. Anillo Industries had bought out all the dies of the Los Angeles Stamp and Stationery Co. (formerly the Los Angeles Rubber Stamp Co.) and planned to go into the token and medal making business. So they took about 3,500 of the old dies and struck 25 sets of uniface tokens which they planned to mount in salesmen sample books. Only four books were made up. Thes sets ended up being sold to token collectors for about $150 per set. The dies used for the restrikes were mostly California trade tokens and medals. Most of the restrikes look just like the original tokens, but the Anillo restrikes can be easily identified by being aluminum and uniface. Some collectors are now paying $1.00 to several dollars each for most of these restrikes (especially those of rare tokens). But these restrikes are frequently offered for sale as original old tokens at high prices.
