823 4th Avenue
San Diego, California
Type: Card Room
Status: Closed
Open: 1951, Close: 1980s

Owned by Arthur J. "Cotton" White (d. 1974). Originally at 807 4th Avenue, it moved down the block to 823 4th Avenue around 1964. Around 1962, White opened a second "White's Card Room" at 373 W. Main Street in nearby El Cajon, CA, and some of these chips were delivered there. The second card room moved down the street to 537 E. Main St. in 1966. Paul Casper took over both card rooms around 1970. Also called the "Cotton White Card Room", the "Cotton Card Room", and "Whitey's Card Room".

T. R. King sold at least 5350 of these small crown chips in ten denominations/colors to Cotton's Card Room, A. J. White, 807th 4th Avenue (later 823 4th Avenue and 373 W. Main St., El Cajon, CA) between 1955 and 1971.

Listing (at the bottom) from the 1962 San Diego Yellow Pages, under "Card Playing Rooms" (Library of Congress).
