Initially two licensed card rooms, first owned by Joseph Caprini and Jack Aten [J&J], which opened in 1966 with J & J card rooms in two Santa Cruz locations: at 601 Front Street and 3500 Portola Drive. In 1967, their partnership ended, and Caprini kept the J & J Club on Front Street, and Aten renamed the Portola Drive location as "The Players Card Room".

Robert W. Dawson bought the J & J club in 1977, and the final owner, Thomas E. Ross, bought the club in 1984.

T. R. King sold 2200 of the small crown chips to Jack Aten, originally at the Aloha Club, 1218 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA, and later to him at the Players Club, 3500 Portola Drive, Santa Cruz, CA, between 1964 and 1967.
