The United States Playing Card Co. sold 1000 of these chips in five colors to the Los Angeles Trunk Factory, Los Angeles, California, on 6/8/1929. The Trunk Factory was a luggage store in downtown Los Angeles.
In 1923, the co-owner of the company, Charles Weingarten, was killed while playing cards in a backroom of the store. Two gunman had arrived to rob the players. Weingarten resisted, grabbed a gun, was shot and killed. The company was taken over by his brother and partner David Weingarten, who was also present at the card game (see Archive).
