The hotel opened in 1888, and is still open today. The attribution of the plain mold engraved chips and the dates for gaming activity come from Eastman's Illustrated Guide to California Card Room Gaming Chips & Checks (1998).

The photograph on the left (c. 1950) is of the historic Crown Room, with crown shaped chandeleirs similar to those on these chips.
